    1. I was taught in my early childhood courses that there are 6 domains of early childhood development. I say there are 7, but we’ll get to that later…

All home school, preschools, and daycare programs should aim to address each of these developmental domains when teaching a young child.

This concept of developmental domains is the foundation for the content of I Can Teach My Child. Everything I post relates to one of the childhood development domains below. I try to make sure there is a variety of activities (not all alphabet activities, for example), but obviously the Social/Emotional and Self-Help/Adaptive domains won’t have the depth or breadth as the others.

THE DEVELOPMENTAL DOMAINS OF EARLY CHILDHOOD

      GROSS MOTOR DEVELOPMENT
This involves learning to use all of the “big” muscles in our body. Crawling, walking, running, skipping, jumping, and climbing are all examples of gross motor activity.

  2. Take the kids for nature walk (for rural areas).
    - Cognitive domain. Ask them what they see, felt (touch), etc. Ask them what can they name things around them that they see, help them count, etc.
    - Physical-motor. As they walk, run, play, touch, handles things in the environment, it leads to both fine and gross motor development.
    - Language. Talking and helping them in naming things in nature walk improves their language and literacy. It also enhances their listening and communication skills.
    - Social-emotional. Helps them in building relationships, group works and getting to know each other better. It also creates realization of oneself and development of moods: happiness and sadness, etc.
    - Creativity and aesthetic. As the come back to school, help them recreate their memory by allowing them to draw what they had experienced by providing papers and colours. cleanliness and healthy habits can be inculcated.

  9. Although we can plan activities for more than one domains of development in an integrated way.If we plan an activity for one domain,it can simultaneously cater to other domain/domains also.I will share one activity for each domain which I have many times planned at school to achieve the required developmental goals
1.Activity for physical motor domain:Enacting on action words. In my classroom for i use to write action words on paper slips and then I ask children one by one to enact the action word written on the paper piece which he/she lifts. They have the opportunity of moving their body parts thus catering to physical motor domain. This activity simultaneously takes care of language development and literacy as children listen to the commands, read from paper slips and speak also
2.Activity for cognitive domain development: Find the things of same shape and/or colour..I provide children with things of various colours and ask them to find things from their surroundings which match with the given object.Similarily things of different shapes are provided to children and they are told to find from the surroundings the things which are of sa.e shape. This activity enhance comparison skills, critical thinking and problem solving thus developing cognitive domain.Simultaneously language and numeracy are taken care of.
3.Language and literacy domain.I plan various activities like asking children to make words, two letter, three letter etc by joining the letters written on paper pieces.similarily one student is asked to enact any action say bathing, washing hands, washing face and other children are asked one by one to tell what he is doing.Similarily various stories are told to children and after listening questions are asked to them and they are asked to recall and reproduce the story following multilingual approach.
4.creative and aesthetic appreciation:I try to make and find rhymes related to various themes like fruits, vegetables wild animals domestic animals etc and sing the same with children. This caters to aesthetic sense and also leads to cognitive and language development and physical motor development as well because children move their bodies while singing leading to fine motor and gross motor development. Similarly drawing of things which they see around their surroundings like fruits vegetables etc also helps to achieve this objective.
5.Social and emotional domain:Various activities are devised by us in school for this purpose.Help others activity. We make one of the child blindfolded and ask others to find him do various activities.By this they understand and become sensitive to the feelings and misfortune of others and lend helping hand.Similarily group activities are planned in which students work together in groups and co-operate and collaborate with each other thus learn social and life skills.

  10. Activitiy 4: Domain of Development

Introduce the game of Hop Scotch (Kith-Kith/Stapu/Langdi/Ekhaat Duhaat/Ekka Kunte Bille/Paandi). Here, the children will not only develop their psycho-motor skills by engaging themselves in the jumping/hopping game but also develop their social engagement with their peers as this game is mostly played in groups of 2 or more. Often, there is a chant from the team players which help children develop the skill of effective communication. The usage of numbers is a crucial aspect in the game where children will learn numeracy which makes them involved learners.

The Seven Domains of Early Childhood Development

I’m going to sound a bit like a textbook right now. I’m sorry. Bear with me. You’ll be glad you did…I hope. :)

I was taught in my early childhood courses that there are 6 domains of early childhood development. I say there are 7, but we’ll get to that later…

All home school, preschools, and daycare programs should aim to address each of these developmental domains when teaching a young child.

ACTIVITIES TO PRACTICE GROSS MOTOR DEVELOPMENT:
    Gross Motor Action Dice
    Baby Obstacle Course
    DIY Soccer Goal
    gross motor development
Rough-&-tumble play with Daddy is great for gross motor development!
    FINE MOTOR DEVELOPMENT
Fine motor activities teach hand-eye coordination. These type of activities require a child to learn to precisely control the muscles in the hands. Things like coloring, writing, cutting with scissors, using tweezers, tearing paper, etc. all help build fine motor skills.

ACTIVITIES TO PRACTICE FINE MOTOR SKILLS:
    Bird Feeder Activity
I Love You To Pieces Craft
    Rainbow Pot of Gold Treat

    fine motor development
    LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT
This developmental domain includes alphabetics, phonemic awareness, oral, and written language. Even though your little one won’t be able to read for several years, you can (and most definitely should) read to her. Talking about things throughout the day (even when it feels silly) is especially important as well. Learning the ABC’s (as well as the sounds each letter makes) is another example of a language activity.

    LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES:
    Animal Sounds For Toddlers
The Ultimate Guide To Dr Seuss Activities
    Wordless Picture Books
    language development through reading

    COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT
This includes cause-and-effect, reasoning, as well as early-math skills. Believe it or not, a baby who continually drops a spoon from his high-chair is exercising his cognitive ability. He learns that when he drops it, you will pick it up (cause-and-effect). Counting and patterning are also included in this domain for preschoolers.

    COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES FOR PRESCHOOLERS:
    DIY Rocket Launcher
Ice Cream In A Bag Experiment
    Homemade Lava Lamp
    How To Make Oobleck
    Ocean Zones In A Jar
    Fireworks In A Jar
    Making It Rain Experiment
    COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES FOR TODDLERS:
Scooping & Sorting Lids for Toddlers
    Toddler Fishing
    Sorting Game for Toddlers
    Sorting Toys By Color
    Matching Animals
    Board Games For Toddlers
How To Teach Your Toddler To Count

These Heart Breaker Number Puzzles are a great way to reinforce one one-to-one correspondence and number recognition.

  24. 1. Gross motor: Here a child learns his basic motor skills from the age of 4month like crawling, rolling, walking, jumping etc so using this we can have some play activities like balance walk from one point to other or using two kids balancing the ball, catching the ball etc All these activities help a child in their gross motor skills.
    2. Fine motor skills: A child learns how to coordinate hands and eye at the same time. We can give them colour books for colouring, tearing the paper, helping a child to hold the pencil and write and many other activities help the child in fine motor skills.
    3. Language: basic and very important for a child. We need to talk to them in a language they understand.
    4. Cognitive: through counting objects, sorting object based on colour or shape, pattern writing etc helps a child to question and be curious in activities.
    5. Social: A child need to socialize with its peer group. This help them to understand other kids, help them to learn new language and same time help their confidence to face others.
    6. Self help: here child need to be taught basic daily chores like brushing their teeth, washing face, washing hands before food and after food, washing fruit before eating it, keeping his toys in its place after the play, wearing shoes, dress etc.. all this will help child to become independent.

Also every child participation is required, may be in the form as tree, sun in sky or fruit on tree, flower on plant and so on. This will make child active participation in story and all will enjoy

  28. Physical motor domain covers the physical health and well being alongwith motor development which includes gross motor skills, fine motor skills and sensory motor skills.
Gross motor skills refers to control of large muscle movements I.e. arms, legs, head.
Here I encourage children to play "throw and catch" ball or any soft toy of different sizes. The children move in a circle alongwith the music. When music stops a name of a child is called out for eg. Gargi catch the ball and the ball is thrown to this child. The music starts again and when it stops Gargi calls out the name of the next child and the ball is passed on again and so on.
In fine motor skills ,usually play dough is given to the children and asked to make different shapes like small balls, shape of a wriggly worm etc.
Socio and emotional domain : usually most of the children enjoy these as they start each day with a check-in smiley poster, where they come in the morning and check the smiley which matches to their mood swing. Also activities like singing in groups, going for nature walk , hand-in-hand with friends makes their day.
In Cognitive developmental domain, the goal is to get the children to think, imagine, invent, explore and to find answer to their problems. Here, the children love to do different types of craft activity, playing matching cards wherein they have to be attentive, memorize and find the right card
Reading aloud, story- telling, singing rhymes support language and Literacy developmental domain and my children really enjoy this workout.
Creativity and aesthetic appreciation developmental domain makes the child enjoy their classrooms. We have for the children lot's of exercises, singing wherein they can dance , express, move, gain appreciation, thereby expressing their innermost feelings.

  48. Rapid Brain Development: The early years witness remarkable brain development, with billions of neural connections being formed. This period is considered a critical window for cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development. The experiences and interactions during this time shape the architecture of the brain, influencing lifelong learning, behavior, and health.

Early Learning: Children are naturally curious and have an exceptional capacity for learning during the early years. They acquire fundamental skills such as language, problem-solving, motor skills, and social skills. Research has shown that high-quality early education and stimulation can have long-term positive effects on academic achievement and social-emotional well-being.

Social and Emotional Development: The early years are crucial for social and emotional development. Children learn to form attachments, develop empathy, regulate their emotions, and interact with others. Positive relationships and a nurturing environment during this period contribute to the development of secure attachments and resilience.

Health and Well-being: Early childhood experiences significantly impact lifelong physical and mental health outcomes. Adequate nutrition, access to healthcare, and a safe environment are essential for healthy growth and development. Early interventions can also help identify and address developmental delays, disabilities, or health issues, promoting better overall well-being.

Long-Term Impact: The effects of early experiences and interventions extend far beyond childhood. Research suggests that investing in early childhood development yields high returns in terms of improved educational attainment, reduced rates of delinquency and crime, enhanced employability, and better overall life outcomes. The early years are crucial for breaking the cycle of poverty and promoting social equality.

Given the significance of the early years, there is a growing recognition among policymakers, educators, and caregivers worldwide to prioritize early childhood development and ensure that children have access to high-quality care, education, and support during this critical period.

  53. play activity for each domain of development. Share your ideas on how you planned the activity for each domain of development.
There are five domains of development - physical and motor, moral, cognitive, language, socio-emotional. Physical development- gross motor skills and fine motor skills- gross motor skills can be developed by regular and active child's play. Child's play refers to the movement taken up by a child for walking, running, throwing, jumping, catching, kicking, balancing, climbing, pulling, pushing toys, holding small objects suitable for the child's age, pail and shovel, filling water with small containers etc. Fine motor skills refers to the building blocks, doodling activities, colouring, handling objects of various sizes, stringing beads, tearing and pasting, cutting, painting, sand play, play with play dough/ clay/ white flour dough, filling bottles. . Moral development refers to the basic values that a child learns in order that the socio- emotional regulation is developed. These are the abilities of life skills which every child must acquire in the process of mental development. Caring, sharing, loving, being empathetic, being kind, understanding etc., develops in the process of playing together, listening to stories and communication. Cognitive development and language is interconnected to each other as the child should understand/ develop the ability to communicate. Communication- verbal or gesticulation helps one to understand the child and helps the child to express its needs and wants. Being inclusive, will help the facilitator and the learner reach great heights in the process of learning. When the facilitator works closely with the child, the schema of the child is well understood and help the facilitator design the activities based on the need of the child creating a Differentiated Instruction developing variation in the content so that the child processes the information and leads in development producing a tangible learning outcome.Socio-emotional learning is the need of the hour as part of the 21st century skills. Self- regulation from the foundational stages will help gain an impetus towards learning. As a whole, with all the functional domains, a child learns to Collaborate, Communicate, connect, competent and thereby build a communal harmony to foster culture and unity in the developing society creating a successful learning environment.

  71. Activity: Places around Us

Similar to the four-corner game, we can designate four places in the room—such as the market, hospital, school, and park—with the assistance of the children. One person can act out or describe something while others guess, respond, and move to the corresponding corner. The educator can start the enactment, and later, children can take turns. This game promotes development in all five domains:

Physical Motor: Moving to the correct place
Cognitive: Guessing the correct place from the clues
Language & Literacy: Giving clues and providing answers
Social & Emotional: Playing and cooperating with the group
Creativity & Aesthetic: Collaboratively setting up the four corners with the children's help.

The Adventures of Squish & Crinkle
    Characters:

    Narrator (you!)
Squish (a ball of soft, squishy dough)
Crinkle (a sheet of crinkly paper)
    Props:

A ball of play dough in a bright color
A large sheet of crinkly paper, like tissue paper or wrapping paper
    Setting:

A sunny meadow, with a gentle breeze blowing.

Narrator: In a sun-drenched meadow, where the grass tickled their toes and the wind whispered secrets, lived two curious friends: Squish and Crinkle. Squish, a ball of doughy delight, could be molded into any shape imaginable. Crinkle, a sheet of papery joy, danced and rustled in the breeze.

(Squish the play dough in your hands to show its softness. Crumple the paper to demonstrate Crinkle's movement.)

Narrator: One day, as Squish basked in the warm sun, he felt a tickle on his cheek. It was Crinkle, fluttering in the wind like a playful butterfly.

Squish: Hello, Crinkle! What are you doing today?

Crinkle: (Rustling excitedly) I'm dancing with the wind, making music with every crinkle and crackle! Come join me!

Squish: But I can't dance, Crinkle. I'm just squishy dough.

Crinkle: Nonsense! Squish, you can do anything you set your mind to. Come close, and feel the wind on your skin.

(Hold the paper near the child and gently blow on it, letting the paper touch their skin.)

Narrator: Squish closed his eyes and let the wind tickle his squishy surface. He felt himself sway and stretch, his form changing with the breeze.

Squish: Wow! I'm becoming a fluffy cloud! Look, Crinkle, I can dance too!

(Stretch and mold the play dough into a cloud shape.)

Narrator: They danced together, the wind guiding their movements. Squish swirled and stretched, Crinkle fluttered and soared. The meadow filled with their playful laughter and the rustling symphony of the wind.

Narrator: As the sun began to set, casting long shadows over the meadow, Squish and Crinkle found themselves nestled in a bed of soft grass.

Crinkle: Thank you, Squish, for reminding me that everyone can dance, in their own unique way.

Squish: And thank you, Crinkle, for showing me that I can be anything I imagine.

Narrator: They snuggled close, Squish soft and warm, Crinkle light and crinkly. And as the stars twinkled in the night sky, they knew their friendship, built on shared adventures and sensory discoveries, would shine brightly forever.

    (The End.)

    Extension activities:

Encourage the child to create their own sensory adventure with Squish and Crinkle. Provide them with different textures (sand, feathers, beans) and sounds (bells, shakers, rain sticks) to explore.
Have the child draw or paint their favorite moment from the play.
Turn the play into a movement activity. Act out the movements of Squish and Crinkle, dancing in the wind, stretching like clouds, and snuggling in the grass.
I hope this little play sparks your child's imagination and helps them explore the world through their senses!

  84. Activity :- Passing the ball in a circle to next partner with music
The direction of passing the ball will change with change of the music.
In this way, they will pass the ball to the next person who is sitting either to their right or to their left.
Teacher may input the words like left side, right side
They may speak the name of the other child and may say," Rohan , catch the ball, Akshay , pass the ball.
Hence second domain is also fulfilled that the child is communicating with others.
    Covering the third domain-
Premath concept like left, right, circle(shape) is understood and practised by the child effectively.

  99. The best sensory activities don’t need to be expensive or elaborate. They are already in your house. The next time you see your child play with safe items like paper towel rolls, pots, straws, and toys, encourage them to have some sensory fun. They can also use these items for imaginative play, which is also great for child development.

Babies and toddlers can use anything and everything to explore the world. And by allowing them to follow their instincts, you help nurture their senses.
